It’s no secret that kitchen remodels are one of the most popular home renovations. In fact, a minor kitchen remodel alone can have an average return on investment of up to 82.7%.
From refreshed kitchen cabinets to brand new countertops, there are many features you can add to your kitchen remodel to take your home to the next level. But what is the most popular feature in a kitchen remodel?
As it turns out, the most popular feature in a kitchen remodeling project isn’t open shelving or any other growing trend. It’s the kitchen island.
Kitchen islands growing in popularity
Home remodeling contractors can tell you that kitchen trends come and go. But kitchen islands have been a consistent element that just keeps growing in popularity because of their aesthetic value and how much they improve the kitchen’s functionality. Kitchen islands provide additional counter space while also giving family and friends an extra place to pull up a chair.
According to the 2020 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, which gathers information from 2,600 Houzz users who’ve completed a kitchen remodel in the last 12 months, up to 61% of kitchen renovators included an island in their finished kitchen. About 33% of those renovators had their home remodeling contractors add a new island to their kitchen space while 22% had their home remodeling contractors update an existing island.
Kitchen island trends we’re seeing
Kitchen islands typically match the rest of the kitchen when it comes to style. But lately, home remodeling contractors are seeing a new trend with kitchen islands: contrasting colors. Kitchen island bases are currently contrasting with the colors of the rest of the kitchen cabinets, a potential shift away from the kitchen trend of contrasting lower and upper cabinets.
However, this contrast isn’t always between two high-contrast colors. Some homeowners are choosing to stick to a neutral color palette with white cabinets and a wood island, thereby maintaining their style while adding visual interest.
Another trend our design build remodelers are seeing is contrasting countertops. This works well for families who put some serious work into their meals and entertaining. For instance, granite countertops add visual appeal and durability while a kitchen island outfitted in butcher block adds a functional space for chopping fruits and veggies.
